MERPCon V is now over and Hawke has had a chance to rest up from his LOONG weekend. Among the many tasks he had set himself was uploading the audio file from my "Raw Hobbit" session, which was recorded live on Saturday, July 25.
I was scheduled to do a standard speaker's session but I've done so many of those through the years I wanted to do something different this time. We had a sizable audience in the room and video of the session was being streamed live.
So I borrowed the format from William Shatner's "Raw Nerve" and I sat in a chair facing past my "guests", randomly selected members of the audience. We chatted about a variety of Tolkien-related topics including the books, movies, and more.
You can now listen to "Raw Hobbit" here. The site promises that you'll eventually be able to download the video -- and I think that will be here.
I'll post something when I am sure the video is available.

Live broadcasts from MERPCon V
If you have not tuned into MERPCon V yet, you should do so. We're doing a panel with young Tolkien fans at 10:00 AM this morning (Pacific Time Zone) and also a live broadcast of Middle-earth Talk Radio this evening at 5:00 PM (PST). You can watch gamers gaming throughout the day on the Webcams.
Yesterday I introduced Tolkien and gaming fans to "Raw Hobbit", a talk show format I put together on a whim when I decided I didn't want to just stand in front of an audience and give another lecture. I set up two chairs similar to the set of William Shatner's talk show, "Raw Nerve".
Grabbing people at random from the audience, I had a blast asking them questions about Tolkien, science fiction and fantasy, gaming, and their lives. Everyone enjoyed it and several people who have attended past MERPCons where I've done sessions told me they really liked the format.
Maybe I'll take "Raw Hobbit" on the road. I'll have to think about that.

News on MERPCon V and other things
MERPCon V will be held in Spokane, WA the weekend of July 24 - 26. This convnetion is the last of the series of five free gaming conventions that Hawke Robinson has been hosting in Spokane, WA at his own expense. MERPCon has combined con-style gaming with lectures by Tolkien scholars and game designers, including Thomas Morwinsky, Chris Seeman, John Rateliff, and me.
Hawke has tried to make MERPCon as open as possible, broadcasting it over the Web and allowing fans to send in questions through a chat room and email. This year the entire event will be broadcast live via multiple Webcams with audio feeds.
As this year's guest speaker I will have a breakout session on Saturday, July 25. You'll be able to watch it live and submit questions via the chat room. You can check the Web site for the schedule. I hope you'll find time to tune in, although the session will be recorded and made available download at a later time.
On Sunday morning we'll host a live panel discussion with young Tolkien fans. Be sure to have your questions ready for them.
In 2010 Hawke will launch Tolkien Moot to replace MERPCon. Tolkien Moot will be membership-supported and will include expanded programming, although gaming will still be an important part of the convention.
In other news, Hawke and I just wrapped up another episode of Middle-earth Talk Radio, which should be available for download later this week. We're also planning to do a live broadcast from MERPCon on Saturday evening. I've asked Hawke to see if he can arrange a phone-in guest but if not then we'll have fun anyway.
Besides working on MERPCon and Middle-earth Talk Radio this year, I've also been publishing the Hobbit News Newsletter. You may have noticed that I haven't found much interesting news in the past few weeks. The idea behind the newsletter is to publish news that isn't being covered on more traditional Tolkien news sites. Still, I hope to put together a new edition later this week.
Finally, Xenite.Org has relaunched its LoTR movie news site with a new design and expanded content. Now Xenite.Org will cover Hobbit Movie News, Guillermo del Toro News, and Tolkien News. Each section has its own archive of news reports.
