This is not your typical science fiction and fantasy convention. It's a community-based festival aimed at kids (of all ages) called the Woodland Hobbit and Fairy Festival. The festival is held at the Hemlock Springs Historic Crafts & Cultural Arts Center, 72 Mitcheltree Hollow Road, in Keating Summit, PA.
Back in January I mentioned this festival in the 3rd issue of Hobbit News. At the time I didn't expect to see any more news on the event but this weekend it appears they are making a last-minute appeal for volunteers.
I found this news story saying they are still looking for volunteers. Of course, the story is on a subscription-based news service and you won't be able to read it for a couple of weeks, so the timing of the publication is not entirely helpful.
Hence, I decided to put my blogs, forums, and newsletters together to help promote the need for help in Keating, PA. If you love kids and hobbits and faeries and you have some time to spare, check out their Web site and maybe you can be a hero for your community. Volunteer.

Issue 10 of Hobbit News published
It has been a long Memorial Day weekend for me but I was able to put together a new issue of Hobbit News today.
Two of the more interesting stories in the newsletter cover a Hobbit house in Wales and a Hobbit hotel in New Zealand.
I think Tolkien fans will be kind of pleased. Be sure to click on the links so you can see the pictures.
And a quick update on Middle-earth Talk Radio: We're a little behind schedule again because we've both been so busy but I hope we'll record a new show in a couple of weeks.
Enjoy!

Xenite adds new SciFi merchandise section
Thanks to Google discontinuing its AdSense Video Units, we needed to find another source of revenue to help manage our server costs. We've been participating in the Amazon affiliate program for several years but placing individual products across a large site or aggregating product links onto single pages is too time-consuming to be a worthwhile effort.
Amazon has now set up its AStore program that lets you create a dynamic store populated directly from their catalog. We've accordingly set up a Science Fiction & Fantasy Store for Xenite.Org and SF-Fandom visitors.
Although the main page covers all science fiction and fantasy topics for books, games, and movies, there are several dedicated sub-sections. We'll appreciate your helping out by making occasional purchases through the store. The Xenite.Org network is a non-profit/non-commercial fan site network.

Harvard University to mix Tolkien with anthropology summer 2009
Dr. Marc Zender contacted us to let us know that he is launching a new recurring course this summer at Harvard University which is of interest to Tolkien fans.
Anthropology and Archaeology S-1641 may sound rather dry and academic but Dr. Zender, a lecturer for the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, will take students on a tour through Middle-earth that examines how Tolkien used language as both narrator and story-teller.
At Dr. Zender's request we have added a listing for the course to the Tolkien College Courses resource on Tolkien Studies on the Web.
Educators teaching Tolkien courses in U.S. and Canadian universities and colleges are welcome to contact us with information about their classes. We'll be happy to add recurring courses to our catalog.
You can read more at the Tolkien Studies Blog to see what our requirements are.
Good luck to Dr. Zender and his students!

From The Daily Tell - Video games helping students
Educators are turning to video game technology to help today's students learn how to manage their finances and study natural history.
In two stories published by The Daily Tell, an online news resource that focuses on American business initiatives that benefit society, we learn that educators are putting video game technology to use in innovative ways.
Two geology professors help students learn natural history through a Second Life "island" where student can interact with natural history elements and watch videos. Second Life allows you to create virtual habitats within its virtual world.
NTV is helping students learn how to manage savings, reduce debt, and maintain a satisfactory life style by planning the finances for "Piggy Banks".
We have an ongoing discussion about these uses of video game technologies in the Video games being used to teach students finance, natural history thread at SF-Fandom.

"The Hunt For Gollum" now available
If you have been waiting for the fan film "The Hunt For Gollum", wait no more. The film is now available for free online viewing at the official Web site. The movie went live on May 3, I am told.
Check out The Hunt For Gollum. There is an unconfirmed rumor circulating that the Tolkien Estate is aware of the movie and has in some form accepted its existence (they apparently don't intend to sue or shut the film project down).
If this rumor is true then it is, hopefully, good news for the other major fan film due out this year, "Born of Hope" (Cf. http://www.bornofhope.com/).
We have discussion about The Hunt for Gollum in our Middle-earth Movies Forum at SF-Fandom.

Other Minds publishes 6th issue
The Internet Tolkien scholarly journal Other Minds has announced its latest issue is available for download as a .PDF file.
The server seems to be running slow and you have to wait a few minutes before it comes up but I think it's well worth the wait.
Although Other Minds is primarily focused on Middle-earth role-playing gaming issues, the contributors extend the area of Tolkien scholarship into languages (particularly thanks to contributions from David Salo and Chris Seeman). Some articles also look at interpretations of Tolkien's sources and cultures.
You can browse the magazine online or save it to your hard drive (I recommend saving a copy). You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file.
Other Minds Issue 6
* Clad in mail - an essay by Oliver Hauss about the technology of arms armour appearing Tolkien's works.
* Banks of the Northern Anduin - a great adventure by Johannes Lomborg about a Hobbit community in the Anduin valley
* Born of Hope - Introducing a fan-made film project that draws heavily on the story of Aragorn's parents as described in the Lord of the Rings
* The Eöldrim - A campaign idea for a very special elven folk * Book Review - Isildur - Reviewing the recent 2nd edition of the fan-fction book "Isildur"
* Númenórean longevity - Detailing all aspects of the peculiar Númenórean longevity compared to other men
* White Hand Rising - A "what if" scenario detailing an alternative beginning to the Fourth Age
* Tharbad Map Name Changes - Glossary of recommended name changes in ICE's Tharbad interpretation
