Is Fringe getting edgier or not?

After watching this week's episode of Fringe I was left wondering if J.J. Abrams and company really have a road map in mind for the storyline or if they are just trying to drag out the second season with continual cliff-hangers.

I like the actors -- all of them. John Noble especially dominates virtually every scene he is in unless Joshua Jackson is given the chance to make some of his flippy "my dad is so wigged out I have no clue what he is doing" comments.

But that's the think about this show. Right now it seems to be dragging on and not getting anywhere, and it's only real asset for now seems to be the acting. The directing is not bad but the episodes move around so much the viewing audience doesn't really get a chance to catch its breath. And the storyline just keeps taking twists and turns.

Is this what television entertainment has come down to? We're just supposed to be an audience of muppets who sit politely on our couches, oo and ah in the right places, and then go blog and tweet about what a great show we love?

I note that Joss Whedon's Dollhouse was just cancelled. He just can't seem to get a break. Every show the guy has launched after Buffy the Vampire Slayer has gotten caught in the doldrums. Is the problem that the networks expect shows to be too formulaic or is it that the science fiction TV audience is becoming jaded to the formulas?

J.J. Abrams talks about "Star Trek" issues

Feeling the sting of fan criticisms about various minutiae in the Star Trek reboot movie, J.J. Abrams recently spoke with Wired to explain a couple of things and promise that more explanations are provided on the DvD.

One area of fan concern was how Kirk ended up on the exact same moon as Spock Prime after he was ejected from the Enterprise. According to Abrams, the writers decided that the Universe insisted the meeting had to take place.

What's interesting about that argument (which is almost certain to confuse and disappoint fans who think they know better than the writers) is that real scientists suggest the future may be sabotaging CERN's efforts to find the so-called "God particle".

The Universe has been accused of many things, so conspiring with itself to arrange for Kirk and Spock to meet in any reality doesn't seem so far-fetched.

It's something to think about, anyway.

Fringe actors talk about "gross" in season 2 warmup

Fox Broadcasting is warming up the fans for Thursday, September 17's second season kickoff of Fringe. Fringe is J.J. Abrams' answer to The X-Files and Dark Angel and maybe one or two other neat science fiction thriller-style shows.

The cast talk about the things that grossed them out in this video which serves as a second season preamble. Fans of Joshua Jackson will not be disappointed. Watch and enjoy and wait....
