Fans Asking Sam Raimi to Make a "Legend of the Seeker" Movie

Legend of the Seeker was a syndicated television show that ran for two seasons in the US and overseas markets from 2008 to 2010. The show performed well in syndicated ratings despite crazy scheduling changes by local affiliates. Based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels, the show brought many new fans to Goodkind's books and also introduced television audiences around the world to Goodkind's imagination. Of course, TV shows are seldom like the books that inspire them but I really enjoyed LOTS and was saddened to learn it was being cancelled.



Legend of the Seeker only failed because the Tribune Company, which controlled about 1/3 of the stations airing the show in the US market, went into bankruptcy in March 2010. Without those TV stations ABC Studios could not afford to keep the show in production. They tried to get SyFy to pick up the show but SyFy was not impressed by the ratings it received for two Legend of the Seeker marathons (most fans didn't even know about them until too late). Also, we heard from star Craig Horner that there was concern over the large number of illegal downloads of episodes.

The downloading was an unfortunate fact of life. For hundreds of thousands of fans around the world it was the only way to see the show. They had no alternative. But things are starting to look up today. New online distribution channels are appearing and science fiction productions are beginning to make some headway.
For Legend of the Seeker there is no immediate chance of a revival of the TV show. Too many of the actors are committed to other projects. But there is general agreement that a movie could be done. And if a successful movie were released then people might be able to see their way to do a whole series of movies or maybe even another television show.

Seeker fans have not been inactive over the past four years. They have built up a presence at science fiction and fantasy conventions around the world. They have paid for advertising in entertainment industry trade journals. They have mounted huge letter writing campaigns, signed petitions, and produced hundreds of fan videos.

With an active fandom that is not ready to let go of the dream, Legend of the Seeker may still have a chance. We just have to find a deal that gives everyone with a vested interest in the franchise a decent shot at making some money. Based on meetings held last year the current hope is based on getting a movie into production.

And Laura is encouraging fans to include their pictures, surrounded by LOTS DvDs. You can simply print the picture in your letter, thus saving time and expense so you don't have to print up photos by themselves.

This is not necessarily a "do or die" or "all or nothing" initiative. Fandom can be patient and wait for a change in the wind. But we want to see this movie made. Let's remind the powers that be there is good reason to make it.
